The Backpack Food Program at local elementary schools kicks off August 1st!
Did you know there are hungry families right here in Central Kentucky? In fact, many children eat their best meals when they're at school. Southland is helping some of these children in our community through our Circles of Influence initiative. About 300 students in 2 local elementary schools are served with backpacks filled with easy-to-prepare food items.
We need food donations to kick off this program for the school year and sustain it weekly until summer!
The following food items are needed each week: (list of items below also available at Connection Point)
- Fruit cups
- Applesauce cups
- Vegetable cups
- Individual microwavable meals (ravioli, soup, spaghetti, etc.)
- Ramen noodles
- Instant oatmeal
- Individual packs of cereal
- Granola Bars
- Pudding cups
- Pop Tarts
- Fruit roll-ups
- Juice boxes
- Shelf stable milk or soymilk (individually packed)
Please NO glass, perishables or cans.
Drop off items in Concourse bins during weekend services, or between 8 a.m. - 8 p.m., daily, Building M
Once school starts what nights will they be filling the backpacks?
They will be filling backpacks on Wednesday nights at 7pm in Building M starting on Wednesday August 12th. First distribution of backpacks will be August 28th.
(The schedule will change on weeks that school has a holiday or break.)
Also - some stores have good sales on backpacks right now - Big Lots & Target both have them in the $8-10 range!
Office Depot is advertising a free Tug Backpack this week (limit 2 per household) with a $10 purchase - so if we can all do just some of our back to school shopping there, we can get lots and lots of free backpacks to donate to the program!!
Walgreens has a buy 1 get 1 sale on backpacks that are $9.99 .
Do you still need any backpacks and/or help filling them on Wednesday nights?
